Debunking The Top Three Myths About Gynecological Health

Hi I'm Dr. Prabakar, and I recently had the enriching experience of connecting with women from my community at a local art and wine festival. Our conversations delved deep into women's health, revealing some common myths about seeing a gynecologist that I feel compelled to address.

Myth #1: "No PAP, No Gynecologist Needed Post-65."

Many women believe that once they hit 65 and PAP tests are no longer routine, gynecological visits can end. However, this is a misconception. Other significant health issues, such as changes to the vulva or cervix, can develop and go unnoticed without professional screening. Thus, annual gynecological exams are still vital for early detection and overall health maintenance.

Myth #2: "A Hysterectomy Eliminates the Need for a Gynecologist."

This is a common misunderstanding. Whether you've had a partial or complete hysterectomy, with or without the ovaries being removed, you should continue yearly check-ups. A gynecologist addresses more than just reproductive health. Issues like urinary leakage, bowel movement frequency, vaginal prolapse, and vaginal dryness are just a few conditions that can arise and need professional attention.

Myth #3: "I'm Too Old for Gynecological Care."

Absolutely not! No age is too advanced for health care. Osteoporosis management, hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, and other late menopausal issues like persistent hot flashes are all within the realm of gynecological care. For instance, at the festival, a 66-year-old lady was surprised when I told her that her hot flashes were still a valid health concern that we could address.

Conclusion:

In summary, every woman, irrespective of her age or whether she's had children or a hysterectomy, should continue to see her gynecologist annually. It's about comprehensive care that adapts to your needs as you age, ensuring a healthier life through all its stages.

Let's shed these outdated beliefs and prioritize our health by keeping those gynecological appointments. Your body and well-being deserve no less.
